I’m inviting the people of Denmark to send me a letter!
I want to commemorate the last hundred days of the Danish Postal Service with a work of art. PostNord will stop delivering letters at the end of December 2025.
The way we communicate has changed so much over the years. The Second World War love letters that I have used in my work are beautifully composed expressions of affection written by ordinary people. We just don’t express ourselves in writing like this in the same way now. I love receiving a handwritten letter or card but it doesn’t happen nearly so often as it used to.
PostNord ending their delivery of letters and removing the post boxes feels like such a significant moment that I wanted to mark it by creating some art.
I worked in Denmark for six months almost thirty years ago and still feel a strong connection with the country where I felt welcomed. I’m inviting the people of Denmark to write to me (in Danish or English) from Monday 22 September until the final collection from post boxes by PostNord on 30 December. It could be a long letter, a short greeting, a card, or even just an addressed envelope without a message. People might want to tell me how they feel about the end of PostNord’s letter deliveries, they could include an old letter from someone else, or just send a quick greeting to let me know where they’re writing from.
The letters and their envelopes will be used in a new artwork called “Med Venlig Hilsen” (the equivalent of ‘kind regards’) which I hope I will be able to display in Denmark.
